What's the difference between Facility Explorer and Metasys?
Both are Johnson Controls building automation platforms, but they reach the market differently. Metasys is sold and installed directly through Johnson Controls branch offices, while Facility Explorer (FX) is the equivalent-caliber platform sold through independent distributors and authorized dealers like Energy Control Technologies. FX is built on the Niagara Framework and serves as the designated replacement for legacy Johnson Controls supervisory controllers such as the NAE, NCM, N30, Companion, and Facilitator. If you work in the independent channel, FX is how you get Johnson Controls-grade controls without going through a JCI branch.
Can Facility Explorer replace my legacy Johnson Controls system without starting from scratch?
In most cases, yes. FX was designed as the direct upgrade path for older Johnson Controls supervisory controllers (NAE, NCM, NCU, N30/N31, Companion, and Facilitator), and it includes drivers that let it communicate with legacy Metasys N2 field devices. That means you can often modernize the supervisory layer and front end while keeping much of your existing field wiring and controllers in place. Do I need an authorized dealer account to buy Facility Explorer software and licensing?
Many Facility Explorer hardware components can be ordered directly, but certain FX supervisory software and license files are restricted and require an authorized account to purchase. As an authorized Johnson Controls Facility Explorer distributor, Energy Control Technologies can source the correct software and licensing for your project. One thing to know: FX license files are keyed to each controller's host ID and are specific to the Niagara version (NiagaraAX and Niagara 4 licenses are not interchangeable).
