Installation Instructions Document No. 540-259 March 17, 2005 Surface Mounted Pipe Temperature Sensor, 100K ohm Thermistor Product Description The Surface mounted Pipe Temperature Sensor (Figure 1) mounts directly on the inlet pipe of a unit conditioner. It is used for sensing heating/cooling changeover for a controller. Figure 1. Surface Mounted Pipe Temperature Sensor. Product Number 540-258 Contents Description Quantity 100K ohm Thermistor 1 Nylon ties 2 Wire nuts 2 Required Tools • Wire cutters • Knife • Duct tape • Wire brush, sandpaper or other abrasive tool Expected Installation Time • Five minutes Prerequisites • Read these instructions before beginning. • If sensor is installed on an uninsulated pipe, a six to eight-inch (15 to 20 cm) piece of insulation, one-inch (25 mm) thick is recommended. Installation NOTE: The sensor should be mounted in a location away from drafts. The recommended procedure is to wrap insulation around the pipe and sensor. 1. If the pipe is insulated, remove a portion of the insulation by making two cuts around the circumference of the pipe (six to eight inches [15 to 20 cm] apart). Make a third cut perpendicular to the first two cuts so that a section of the insulation can be removed in one piece (Figure 2). Save this piece. 2. Using an abrasive tool, clean the surface of the pipe where the sensor is to be mounted to ensure good contact with the inlet pipe. Figure 2. Cutting the Insulation. 3. Loop the nylon ties around the pipe. Place the sensor in position under the ties on the pipe. Route the sensor wires under the nylon ties for strain relief. Pull the free end of each tie to tighten. Cut off excess tie, leaving about 1/4-inch (6 mm). See Figure 3. 4. Replace the insulation removed in Step 1, and secure it to the pipe with duct tape. NOTE: If the pipe is not insulated, wrap a piece of insulation (as noted in Prerequisites) around the sensor and pipe. Secure the insulation to the pipe using duct tape. 5. Using two of the wire nuts provided, connect the sensor wires to the field wires. See Figure 3. 6. Connect the field wires to the controller. See Figure 4. Item Number 540-259+3, Rev. 011 Page 1 of 2 The installation is now complete. Document No. 540-259 Installation Instructions March 17, 2005 Installation, Continued Figure 3.
